SSW Update - December 2001

.NET Object Design

The Cutting Edge

Some really good news on the Exchange front. Microsoft have just released Service Pack 2 (SP2) which fixes some server issues, some of which were previously available as Microsoft Quick Fix Engineering (QFE) patches and also includes a number of feature enhancements and utility updates.

Outlook Web Access seems to be top the list of enhancements with the new features in OWA. For instance, it now supports meeting reminder pop-up windows, including the popular feature that lists all undismissed reminders in a single window. Outlook Web Access users can also search their mailbox and view and edit distribution lists stored in their Contacts folder. View and browsing enhancements allow users to skip to the next or previous item for reading mail and perform type-down searches.

At SSW we have had no problems and recommend you install it - available at https://www.microsoft.com/exchange You are about to leave the SSW site

Cheers until next time,
Adam

The Sydney .NET Users Group

NET Object Design - Authoring Effective Types and Objects Hierarchies

The .NET framework provides extensive support for object and component orientated design techniques. Taking advantage of this support requires an understanding of the principles involved, and knowledge of how to implement these principles in .NET.

At this month's meeting we will begin by demonstrating the techniques required to successfully design and author types that interact well with the .NET framework and Base Class Libraries (BCL). Topic will include:

  • Value versus reference types
  • When and how to override the Equals and GetHashCode methods
  • Implementation Interfaces
  • Object finalization and clean up
  • Method modifiers.

The second part of the presentation will focus on designing object hierarchies according to the principles of object-orientated design. Topics covered will include:

  • Object Orientated Principles and how .NET supports these
  • Beyond objects - component-orientated features of .NET
  • Design Pattern Basics

The next User Group meeting will be held on Wednesday 19th of December at 5:45 PM.
